Congratulations to Ray Martin who picked up his first senior Wellington title on Monday winning the Wellington Open Pairs with his dad Marty (Island Bay). The Martins were too good for the Wilton pair of Blake Lintz and John Gray taking out the win 19-9 at the Hutt club. Ray has previously won a Development 2-4-2 Pairs title, and has been close in many senior events without quite cracking the maiden win.
It was a good tournament for Victoria with John Legge and Laurie Guy making it through to the semifinals before going down to Lintz and Gray in a tight match 16-12, and Kay Carr and Leigh Griffin battling their way through to the Womens semifinals before Johnsonville’s Paula Meredith drove out Victoria’s shots on the last end when the scores were tied.
The results see the Victoria men move up one place to third in the Bowls Wellington Club of the Year race, while the women fall to second spot behind Johnsonville.
Unfortunately as the Martins were a family team rather than a club team, they will not be representing Wellington in the Pathways national club pairs play-offs.
