Congratulations to Victoria club President Richard Corry and Stokes Valley’s Euan Wong in winning the 17th Speight’s Victoria Invitation 2-4-2 Pairs today. In trying conditions, Corry and Wong came out on top in a see-saw battle in the final overcoming former World Champion Andrew Curtain (Nelson) and Gary Ruane (Victoria) 14-10. Whichever team came out on top, Victoria was going to have its first winner of its own annual prestigious tournament since Kevin Rice in 2007.
Curtain and Ruane came through a tough draw having disposed of former winners Ray Boffa and Rob Ashton in the quarterfinals, and Justin Goodwin and Chris Le Lievre in the semifinals.
The Plate was shared by the Bob McAuley (Dunedin)/Blake Signal (Stokes Valley) and Adam Johnstone (Manawatu)/Raymond Martin (Victoria) combinations, and the Shootout by Bruce Henderson/Tom Henderson and Roy Gibb/Kevin Gutschlag.
Due to a 4 hour rain delay on Saturday, the tournament controllers had to rearrange the format with the third section play game played on Sunday morning followed by a straight knockout format in both the Main Event and Plate.
