Invitation Pairs down to semifinal stage

Victoria 18th Invitational Pairs – QUARTERFINAL RESULTS

The Speight’s Victoria Invitation 2-4-2 Pairs is down to the semifinals stage with most attention focused on a heavyweight battle between the Gary Lawson (Canterbury) / Justin Goodwin (Auckland) and Maurice Symes (Canterbury) / Raymond Martin (Victoria). The other semifinal also contains some home club interest with Roy Gibb / Jeremy Kydd (Victoria) facing Bruce Henderson (Johnsonville) / Phil Todd (Titahi Bay). Weather conditions have vastly improved from a cold and wet Saturday in which only 1 round was able to be completed. For the second year in a row, section play continued on to the Sunday to find the eight pairs in the Main Event, and eight pairs in the Plate which have been converted to a straight knockout format.

There were many surprise casualties from section play with neither of last year’s finalist pairs (Richard Corry (Victoria) / Euan Wong (Stokes Valley) and Andy Curtain (Canterbury) / Gary Ruane (Victoria)) reaching the last eight. Neither did Commonwealth Games representatives Shannon McIlory (Nelson) playing with Lou Newman (Victoria) nor Blake Signal (Stokes Valley) with Bob McAuley (Dunedin) reach the main event. Rob Ashton (Johnsonville) who last week won a trip to Scotland through the P.B.A came crashing down to earth with partner Ray Boffa (Manawatu) not winning a match.
