Former international Gary Lawson won his 5th Speight’s Victoria Invitation 2-4-2 Pairs with partner Justin Goodwin but had to come through extra ends in both their semifinal and final to win. A heavyweight semifinal lived up to expectations with Lawson and Goodwin down all the way, forcing an extra end which had to be played twice, before overcoming Maurice Symes and Raymond Martin. The favourites were up most of the way in the final but excellent draw bowls from the Victoria pair of Roy Gibb and Jeremy Kydd forced an extra end. Kydd drove the jack in the ditch leaving about a metre for Lawson but the master was up for the challenge drawing a shot within inches of the woodwork to win 10-9.
The Plate event was shared between Blake Signal (Stokes Valley) / Bob McAuley (Dunedin) and Mike Solomon with late replacement Ken Addley (Naenae). The Shootout was shared between Ken Brown / Allan Brider (Johnsonville) and Brendon Gibson (Johnsonville) / Alf De Munnik (Victoria).
