Congratulations to Laurie Guy and Richard Corry who won the P.B.A Ranking Pairs event at the Heretaunga club in Hastings at Queen’s Birthday Weekend. Laurie and Rich beat the seemingly unbeatable Murray Glassey, partnered with Angela Boyd in the semifinal 9-7, 2-12, 2-0, before going on to beat our own Lou Newman in the final. Lou skipped Dale Lang (Johnsonville) and provided another good fight before going down 9-4, 6-7, 2-0.
Earlier in the weekend, Laurie had reached the semifinals of the Scottish International Open Singles qualifier, going down to Glassey 10-5, 10-4. Glassey then went on to beat Stephen Zino proudly playing in his Victoria shirt, in a cliff-hanger 8-10, 9-7, 2-0. Steve won the first set, and was 7-4 up after 6 of the 9 ends in the second set before Glassey went up a level winning the last three ends of the set, and both ends of the tiebreak.
More good results came later in the month in the World Indoor Singles qualifier in Hastings, with Laurie losing a quarterfinal to eventual winner Steve Love, and Rich going down at the semifinal stage to another Manawatu player, Craig Gush.
The next event is the Welsh International Open Singles qualifiers 0n 11th August in Pukekohe, Hastings, Dunedin and Invercargill.
