Congratulations to Kirsten Griffin and Nicole Toomey in winning the Wellington Development 2-4-2 Pairs at the Victoria club today. The local team struggled to win ends early in the final, with only a four on the second end to show for their endeavours after 9 of the 16 ends, trailing the Tawa team of Lorraine Rowe and Jean Brewer 4-10. But the floodgates opened on the tenth and eleventh ends with consecutive sixes to the Victoria team to surge to the lead 16-10 and they never relinquished control from then on eventually winning 22-10.
Surprisingly this was Victoria’s first ever win in the Women’s Development 2-4-2 Pairs, and Nicole’s first ever Wellington title of any description. Kirsten has four senior titles. Their road to the final included a quarterfinal win over clubmates Sarah Taukamo and Robyn Rintoul 20-9. The title comes a week after both girls were selected for New Zealand teams to play Australia in March – Kirsten debuts in the Development side, while Nicole will skip the triple and four in the Under-18 side at Howick in Auckland.
