Victoria featured prominently on the final day of the Wellington Open Singles at Naenae today. Laurie Guy beat Ray Martin 21-16 in the mens semifinal only to go down to Robbie Bennett (Titahi Bay) 15-21 in the final. Victoria had four quarterfinalists with Roy Gibb and Richard Corry bowing out last night. Rich had Robbie down 14-1 before the 2012 champ fought back to charge on into the final day.
The best bowls of the tournament came in the concluding stages of the womens final where Nicole Toomey went down 20-21 to former Victoria player Lisa White in a sensational finish. Nicole was holding two on the jack in the last end before Lisa drove the jack in the ditch with her final bowl to win the title. The match came close to being ended by a controversial new time limit rule that even applies to Centre finals. Lisa earlier beat Helen King 7-21 in the semifinal.
