Ray Martin will be returning to the NZ Professional Bowls Association Finals Weekend this time securing his first qualifier wins while also coordinating the local PBA events at the Naenae indoor complex. Martin came close in June to coordinating and winning being pipped in the final of the Scottish Singles to Bay of Plenty’s David Jones but had a commanding weekend at the end of July winning the World Indoor Pairs with Victoria clubmate Tim Toomey and World Indoor Singles qualifiers. Martin and Toomey accounted for Wairarapa pair Ian Monaghan and Scott Mackenzie in a very close final 6-5, 5-6, 2-0 with Toomey improving from his runner-up in this event last year. Martin then went on to keep alive hopes of returning to the World Indoor Singles in the UK beating Manawatu’s Mark Noble 10-1, 12-8 on Sunday. Martin and Toomey will now play in the NZ PBA Finals Weekend in Hamilton September 13-15th.
Mark Burgess and Nicole Toomey also reached the quarterfinals of the World Indoor Singles qualifier.
