The finalists of the Men’s Club Fours have been found:
Ray Martin, Lou Newman, Robert Gray, Colvin Inglis vs Ben King, Laurie Guy, Ian McLeod, Frazer MacDiarmid
On a tricky sandy surface, the high-flying Roy Gibb skipped team suffered a heavy defeat in their final match vs King, which left them third on differential. There were 3 teams that finished with 3 wins.
Ray Martin vs Ben King was also the fours final last year, though both aren’t the same four.
Club Pairs commenced
The Men’s Club Pairs commenced in the afternoon with one round taking place. And an interesting round of games it was!
Neil Reid and Rhys Barlow came out on top against Robbie Bennett and Scott Roddick. Robbie and Sid were a few ahead for most of the match, but Rangi & Rhys pulled it to even on the last end, then got the win on a final end measure! Robbie unfortunately extends his losing streak out to 10 games.
The father and son pair of Marcus & Gary Ruane won vs two Premier players, Ben King and Ian McLeod. And won with an end to spare! Marcus was leading very well, and Goz played some HUGE last bowls.
First year bowler Frazer MacDiarmid continued his good start to the season. After making the fours final in the morning, in his first ever club pairs match, him and Laurie Guy knocked over last year’s winners, James Fairhall and Richard Corry. James and Richie got out to a good start, ahead 10-2 after 8 ends. Just as Laurie was contemplating whether the match would go the full 18 ends he picked up a few shots to close it up. Frazer drew crucial shots on the last two ends of the match, including on the last end when the scores were tied.
The only match that went to the favourites on paper was Ray Martin and Robert Gray who got a reasonably comfy win over Roy Gibb and Graham Goudge. This game was most notable for Robert running away with the Mooner of the Day award for walking several metres into the rink next door and updating their scoreboard with his score.
Meanwhile, the women are continuing to search for a final player in their premier team with several people away on Week One. People walking past the club are a chance to make it 🙂 Good to see the commitment from the current women’s premiers, as they have been training hard for the new season.
